Central Italy was struck by a powerful, shallow, 6.2-magnitude earthquake at 3:36 am local time, devastating several mountain villages, and resulting in at least 73 deaths so far. Buildings in towns close to the epicenter collapsed on top of each other, falling into the streets, trapping hundreds in enormous piles of rubble. The death toll is still expected to rise as rescue teams reach some of the more remote villages in the region. [21 photos total]
